Nestled in the vibrant heart of Avenue Louise in Brussels, a culinary gem has just opened its doors 10 days ago, setting a new precedent in the Belgian food scene. As the very first hand roll bar in Belgium, this Japanese restaurant promises an authentic and immersive dining experience, and I had the pleasure of enjoying a remarkable lunch there recently as I was walking by!
From the moment I walked in, the warm and inviting atmosphere set the stage : the owner and staff greeted me with genuine smiles, their enthusiasm for their craft evident in every interaction. The ambiance is serene and sophisticated, exuding minimalist elegance. The interior, masterfully designed by SōKe (you can find them here on Instagram), features clean lines and a neutral palette and textures play a significant role in enhancing the atmosphere. Almost reminding me of brutalist architecture, the smooth concrete walls juxtapose against the warm, natural wood of the seating and tables. The lighting is soft and intimate, highlighting the artisanal tableware, which includes beautifully crafted ceramic dishes and embroidered napkins. This thoughtful design reflects the restaurant’s commitment to an authentic and immersive dining experience, making it a perfect spot for a tranquil lunch or a cozy evening out.
I took my time reading their fun menu and as I ordered, they brought out a small starter on the house : udon in a delicious homemade broth. The rich, savoury umami flavours of the broth were a perfect introduction to the meal and hinted at the culinary experience to come.
For a quick lunch, I opted for the shiitake roll and avocado roll. Even as they could seem to be simple and plain choices for vegetarian rolls, the high quality of each ingredient was shining through every bite! The rice was fluffy and perfectly seasoned, the shiitakes were marinated in savoury homemade teriyaki sauce, and the avocado was of high quality and accompanied by a sweetly acidic pickled vegetable. Both hand rolls were crafted with care, the shiitake roll being a delightful blend of earthy mushrooms while the avocado roll offered a creamy, refreshing contrast.
As I savored my rolls, the owner struck up a conversation and was surprised to learn that I had never tried sushi with fish before. With a warm smile, he insisted I try the seabream hand roll, a house specialty featuring fresh seabream tartare. I was hesitant at first, but one bite was all it took to convert me. The seabream was incredibly fresh, with a delicate texture and subtle flavor that paired beautifully with the seasoned rice and crisp seaweed. I couldn’t have asked for a better first experience, and was so touched and grateful for the warmth of the gesture!
As I finished enjoying my meal, I couldn’t help but notice the intriguing cocktail menu. It was clear that the restaurant prides itself on offering unique and carefully crafted drinks. Curious, I inquired about the cocktails as I was paying. This led to a delightful discovery: the owner and I are both big whisky enthusiasts. To my surprise and delight, he offered me a taste of a Japanese whisky I had never encountered before. The whisky was smooth and complex, a perfect end to a wonderful meal.
This hand roll bar is not just a place to eat; it’s a place to connect with passionate individuals who are dedicated to bringing a piece of Japanese culture to Brussels. The care and attention to detail in every dish, the welcoming atmosphere, and the exceptional service all contribute to a truly special dining experience.
I am already planning my next visit, eager to explore more of the menu and indulge in one of their original cocktails. Whether you’re a seasoned sushi lover or a curious newcomer like me, this hand roll bar is a must-visit. With its innovative concept and dedication to quality, it’s poised to become a beloved spot in the Brussels dining scene. I’m sure it will become one of my go-to to have a nice cocktail and quick hand roll before going out to dance!
So, if you find yourself in Brussels, make sure to stop by and experience the first hand roll bar in Belgium. Trust me, it’s a culinary adventure you won’t want to miss!
